As the new year unfolds, the construction industry is showing promising signs of recovery. Builders across the country have reported an influx of inquiries for new builds and extensive renovations, a much-needed boost after two challenging years.

The rise in demand is evident, with Hawke’s Bay builder Dylan Cossey—of DC Construction and The Block NZ fame—sharing that his phone has been "ringing hot" in recent weeks. “From March to September last year, it was quiet. But now, things are picking up again,” Cossey told OneRoof. His recent projects include a significant 250sqm extension to a 1950s home and consultations for multiple new builds in 2025.

Managing Director Mark Trafford attributes this to the recent drops in interest rates, which have helped rebuild homeowner confidence. “The renovation market has certainly picked up. If rates continue to fall, we anticipate even greater activity in the coming months,” says Trafford.

Kitchens, bathrooms, and extensions remain top priorities for our clients, reflecting a mix of practicality and lifestyle upgrades. While the average renovation costs around $30,000 to $40,000, we’ve seen larger projects exceeding $100,000, highlighting a growing willingness to invest in quality improvements.

However, homeowners remain cautious, ensuring they get the best value for their money. As construction costs stabilise and competition among builders increases, 2025 looks to be a pivotal year for the industry.
