Things to consider when building a new deck
There are many variables to consider when deciding which direction to go with your deck. Things like materials, size, budget all come into question. Keep these following points in mind when planning yours.

Material – Historically, the original and most popular choice to build a deck out of is wood. However, these days it’s not the only decking material available. Some materials include:

• Weather-Resistant Woods such as cedar, cypress and ipe.
• Pressure-Treated Woods such as treated lumber.
• Hardwoods like teak, ipe and Brazilian hardwoods.
• Composite Decking which consists of recycled plastic and wood fiber.
• Other alternatives such as plastic and aluminum.

Design – Size will typically be dictated by the deck’s location and your budget. If you have a small space, you’ll have a small deck. Same goes for small budget. With more space and bigger budget, your sizing and design options increase. The shape and look of your deck should be based on the design of your house. A deck which doesn’t match the design of the house will look forced and out of place. Follow the lines, proportions and architecture of your house, so that the deck is a natural extension.

Budget -Your budget will dictate almost all aspects of the deck, including size, design, extras, material and any features you’d like to have on it. Bear this all in mind when first planning the deck, and keep in mind the costs associated with any choices you do make.

Building a new fence
A fence is an excellent feature for your home if you value privacy and security. Most freestanding or terraced homes in New Zealand require fencing for security purposes and as a screen for privacy. Things to consider when building a new fence

There is a lot to consider when building a fence, despite how simple the task may seem. Heights, layout, material and gates are just some of things you need to take into consideration.

Layout – Layout of your section is a major factor to consider when planning your fence. Any areas that rise and fall will require adjustment to the fence line by either adjusting the fence posts or the height of the fence. This needs to be taken into account when doing an initial design. Even and slight incline can be a big deal and needs to be accounted for.

Material – Fences can be made of various materials and it’s important to consider the positives, negatives and maintenance needs of each material. Wooden fences tend to require more maintenance than other fences, but they also tend to be the cheapest option. Other materials can include:

• Concrete
• Hedge
• Metal (chain link for example)
• Vinyl or synthetic

Entrance – Plan ahead where you will have your entry/exit or gate in the fence, and build accordingly. Selection of gates can add another layer to the project, and are a subject of their own, so do your research before selecting the gate for your fence.
